Ten years ago, photojournalist Camille Lepage was assassinated in the Central African Republic Contactez-nous

Ten years after her disappearance, Human Rights Watch wanted to pay tribute to this young 26-year-old photojournalist, “a true friend of the Central African Republic” in the words of Lewis Mudge who knew her well.

“The memory I keep is that of a young girl of 26 who was very dynamic, very passionate about her work,” recalls the Central Africa director of the NGO joined by Pierre Firtion of the Africa department of RFI. She was not cynical. On the contrary, she wanted to be a journalist and it’s a job that is a way to turn on the lights in difficult places, like the CAR. I remember very well what she really was like, she was a friend of the CAR.

The risks taken by journalists

“Camille was killed in the west of the country ten years ago. Only a few weeks ago in Bouar and Bohong, around twenty civilians were documented who were killed by the 3R group. The situation is still dangerous in CAR. The CAR, we can say, is a somewhat forgotten country. It is always the civilians who suffer from this violence, it is the humanitarians who try to do their best and it is the journalists who always take risks, like Camille did ten years ago to try to show the world what’s happening. »
